“It’s about time” is right for up-and-coming band Barcelona. Mostly from the Seattle area, Barcelona’s tear-jerking, passion-driven lyrics will fill your heart, break it, and patch it up again in all of two minutes.
Absolutes is just that- absolute in sonic quality, lyrics, and variation. Upbeat hit It’s about time catches attention with infectious melodies, while a softer First Floor People holds it’s own with moving words; Brian’s voice is perfection paired with smooth harmonies and a steady beat.
“[Barcelona] wanted an album, not just a pile of 11 random songs,” said manager BJ Olin. “The title Absolutes was Brian’s way of describing the paradox that in life, there are certain things that are absolute, but sometimes it’s hard to know what those are.”
Opening track Falling Out Of Trees provides good insight into the rest of the album, establishing a mature sound straightaway. It’s About Time has all the ingredients of a hit single- don’t be surprised if it’s stuck in your head for days (and trust me, you wont be pissed about it). A hard act to follow, but Stars doesn’t disappoint; a seamless transition is followed by a touching story.
About the choice between relationships, Lesser Things moves faced paced with questioning lyrics alongside a contagious beat. Numb spills cheeky lyrics about Brian’s relationship with his dad; containing a catchy chorus that will make you sing along. Lastly, Please Don’t Go provides a beautiful ending to the album leaving you with a sense of completion- completely absolute.
