Strong production values and well-crafted rock songs make stiff competition for any mainstream releases in 2006 or even 2007, for that matter. Iowa City’s Death Ships come out swinging on their first release Seeds of Devastation.
Recorded in Atlanta, Georgia with Matt Malpass at his Marigolds and Monsters Studio, this release is a moody and atmospheric take on the Alt-Country sound. The album is so well put together that it doesn’t get pigeonholed into any one style. And that’s a good thing. Seeds of Devastation is definitely a Rock record with a dash of Indie and Country influence. Main songwriter and vocalist Dan Maloney knows where to stick hooks that you’ll find yourself humming for weeks following your initial listen.
It’s great to see an Independent release on a level that rivals most of the generic Mainstream junk we are forced to pay attention to. Death Ships are on a level far above all that and it is very refreshing, and they’re just getting started.
You can hear an interview with Dan on Episode #10 of my podcast.
Stand out tracks:
“Remains to be Seen”
“Symmetrical Smiles”
“Echo Children”
