The Shake: Kick It

The Shake

The Indie Review
By Sean Duregger
July 21, 2007

Band: The Shake

Album: Kick It
Rating: ★★½☆☆

Sometimes an album can’t capture a band’s live persona. It’s a shame, because according to The Shake’s many fans, they put on one of the best live shows in New York City.

The band’s debut album Kick It is a pretty dull affair. Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to like this album. I’ve read good things about The Shake and tried to give this album a chance. While there are a couple good moments on the album, the rest of the songs just didn’t stand out at all.

The tracks that show a little promise are Princes & Kings, with it’s raw rock feel, and Manic Boogie, which is a song I want to see live. The rest of the album is nothing ground-breaking and very “been-there-done-that” Also, the band just doesn’t sound tight on the recording. Sometimes the drums or guitars just seem off and sloppy.

So, final thoughts? The Shake’s Kick It is a mediocre debut with really nothing memorable about it. Hopefully the next recording captures the freshness of The Shake’s live show.
