Sigur Rós - Med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust

Sigur Ros is probably one of the most unconventional and innovative bands working today. Rather than being driven by styles and trends, Sigur Ros is a true example of true art and music colliding. Med sud I eyrum vid spilum endalaust (translated: “With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly”) is the culmonation of Sigur Ros‘ amazing previous work, taking their sound to more of a well rounded blend of beautiful, slow and haunting melodies combined with a more organic lively sound.

It seems Sigur Ros have embraced more of an organic sound lately. First with the release of Sigur Ros‘ “Rock” album Takk, then with their DVD release Heima and the subsiquent CD release of B-Sides and live studio versions of some of their favorite songs. Med sud I eyrum vid spilum endalaust takes the best moments from these albums and is Sigur Ros‘ strongest album to date.

As an album as a whole, there is a lot more variety to work with here. Gobbligook can be justified as Sigur Ros‘ first successful single and stands alone as a great song. The rest of the album is as innovative with impeccable production; crisp and organic, with less distortion and echo than the previous albums. Adding to the layers of each song are various levels of strings and piano.

Easily the most accessible Sigur Ros album, Med sud I eyrum vid spilum endalaust still maintains the integrity that comes with all Sigur Ros albums. Extremely artistic and not guided by a corporate label, Sigur Ros exists to create works of art with each album. With Med sud I eyrum vid spilum endalaust, Sigur Ros have added yet another masterpiece.

Moving Mountains - Pneuma

Once every few years an album comes along and defies all expectations and inspires the inner musician/artist in me. The last album that had the biggest impact on me creatively was The Appleseed Cast’s 2 album set Low Level Owl I & Low Level Owl II. These are albums I still listen to on a regular basis and nothing has ever come close to the genius of those albums. Until now. Moving Mountains debut: Pneuma is an album that stretches itself more artistically than anything that has come along in the past 8 years.

What makes Pneuma so great is how the album flows together as a whole album. You have no standout radio singles here. Moving Mountains have created a musical movement with Pneuma. Each song relies on and builds from the previous, creating an experience that seems to be left out of most albums today. Like Sigur Ros, Moving Mountains aren’t afraid to take the minimalist approach and let songs simply exist. There is no formula here, just honest, pure and passionate songwriting.

Moving Mountains have burst onto the music scene with a brilliant debut. Pneuma exists on a higher plain than anything I’ve heard in quite a long time. This is an album that will transcend time and genres and proves that you don’t have to stick to formula or trends to have a successful release.

Red Fox Grey Fox

The Indie Review
By Sean Duregger

Band: Red Fox Grey Fox
Album: From the Land of Bears, Ice and Rock
Rating: ★★★★★

Crafted with genuine emotion and beauty, Red Fox Grey Fox have created a masterpiece of sound, texture, and beauty with their newest release From the Land of Bears, Ice and Rock. Most importantly, Red Fox Grey Fox crafted an album that demands attention. With so many bands overcrowding myspace, radio, podcasts and car commercials, it’s rare that a band comes a long head-and-shoulders above the current trends.

Red Fox Grey Fox brought me back to the time when I first discovered bands like The Appleseed Cast, Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, Sigur Ros and even Radiohead. Lead singer Pete Miller’s vocals bring a genuine honesty to each song and blends in perfectly with intricate and delicate guitar work, percussion and keys. The result is a mix of emotional intensity, creativity and sheer beauty. All this works together for a fresh and welcomed sound. There are so many layers to From the Land of Bears, Ice and Rock. that it is an album worth an immediate re-listen.

From the Land of Bears, Ice and Rock by Red Fox Grey Fox will be released August 4th, 2007 on Say Rah Records.
