SLINGSHOT DAKOTA - Fall Tour Update
——————————————————-
* U.S. Tour begins today
* First two shows = Street Smart Cyclist’s last two shows EVER
——————————————————-
Today and tomorrow, Brooklyn, N.Y. / Easton, P.A. duo Slingshot Dakota kicks off a two-month tour of the U.S. in style, playing what is sure to be two amazing shows with Street Smart Cyclist .
Of course, the news is a tad bittersweet as the Street Smart Cyclist boys have decided to call it a day. The festivities at tonight’s show in Brooklyn - as well as tomorrow’s Allentown, P.A. gig - will be the band’s last. It’s a shame too; Street Smart Cyclist’s sound combined jazzy, intricate emo and joyful punk rock abandon in a way that always evoked a warm feeling of nostalgia for bands like Cap’n Jazz while also pointing toward new ideas and a progression of their sound.
They leave us with an acoustic tour EP and a three-song seven inch…one of the first releases I ever worked for Beartrap and which remains a favorite to this day. Rumor has it that the band’s last few songs will eventually be released on vinyl and cd format. It’s a silver lining, I suppose.
Back to happier thoughts, namely Slingshot Dakota on tour. Most of September and October is booked / being booked, but there are a few shows that the band is trying to nail down. If you can help out, drop me a line or send an email directly to Tom and Carly atslingshotdakota@hotmail.com.

While many people aren’t huge fans of female fronted bands, Slingshot Dakota, stands apart from others. Besides having a female vocalist, they in no way compare to the likes of Paramore and No Doubt just to name a few. Vocalist and keyboardist, Carly Comando, has an excellent vocal range, specifically in track number 4, South 1st. At points it does sound more like screaming than singing, but for the most part she displays a great vocal range and maintains a high level of energy throughout.
Aside from her voice, the instrumentals in each track are phenomenal. Its really the instrumentals more than anything else that separates Slingshot Dakota from other bands. Drummer, Tom Patterson, in my opinion, gives this band their unique sound. Specifically in Let Go, the instrumental break in the middle is awesome. And while they might not have recreated the wheel with this one, I can’t think of another band currently popular that sounds like them besides maybe Minus The Bear, instrumental wise, not vocally. Lyrically, it is not really impressive nor original, but there is no denying they have a quirky style going on and its pretty damn catchy.
Even if you don’t like the songs, or lyrics, there is no denying Slingshot Dakota has talent. The songs remain consistent in style throughout the album, but each song has a slightly different feel. There are many good tracks on Their Dreams Are Dead, But Ours Is The Golden Ghost, but I don’t think any, maybe with the exception of The Golden Ghost, have hit potential. Slingshot Dakota have something going on here and maybe its not their time yet for mainstream consumption, but I dig it.

Sure, they’re a two piece now, but Slingshot Dakota’s Golden Ghost is unquestionably warmer, more textured and dynamic than anything the band has ever written. While heartfelt melodies still anchor the duo’s compelling sound, Slingshot has injected a bit of that ol’ punk rock abandon - not to mention a heaping does of good times - into the mix. The result is as tender as it is raucous and fun.
Ten irresistibly engaging songs recorded by Latterman’s Phil Douglas…order a copy directly from Slingshot Dakota via their myspace page or pick up a copy directly from Carly and Tom as they tour the U.S. for six weeks in March and April. Shows are currently being booked but you can check out the routing here.
